Friends of Portage Lake, Inc. started as an informal committee in August of 2009 and formally incorporated in June of 2011 with the purpose to learn, study, and monitor the condition and water quality of Portage Lake in St. Joseph County Michigan.

Mendon Township is very supportive of our lake management program. Through a Portage Lake Special Assessment which started in 2015, we have the funds for a lake management plan. Our Lake management partner, Professional Lake & Land Management (PLM) makes several visits to our lake each year to perform water quality analysis, survey for weed development and to treat invasive weeds.

Our comprehensive lake management plan includes not only monitoring and treating the lake but also educating our communities so we can all enjoy a healthy lake.

Consider becoming a Friend of Portage Lake or renewing your membership. Members are invited to a Spring and Fall Membership meetings. In addition, members vote on a board member to represent their Lake area. Funds collected from memberships are used for items not covered in the special assessment including source testing on the lake, trials for invasive plants, insurance, webpage and postage. Membership is only $25.00.
